About Our Trainings
At Kansas Child Care Training Opportunities (KCCTO), we know that every early childhood professional learns in different ways and at different times. That’s why we offer a wide range of training formats to meet your needs:
- Self-paced online courses you can complete anytime, anywhere. See what they are like with our open access Online Learning Launchpad.
- Instructor-led, live virtual sessions that allow you to connect and learn in real time.
- In-person trainings that bring hands-on learning and collaboration to your community.
- Specialized coaching and technical assistance to support your professional growth and unique goals.
To keep our courses fresh, relevant, and aligned with current best practices, KCCTO updates all online courses twice a year, in July and January. This ensures that what you’re learning reflects the latest standards and strategies in early childhood care and education.
With flexible options and continually updated content, KCCTO trainings are designed to make professional development both accessible and meaningful.

Courses and Training FAQs
Registering for Courses/Training
All KCCTO courses and training are available at Cape. Visit www.yourcape.org to explore a wide variety of professional development that match your interests and needs.
In-Person Training
In-person training events are held in communities across the state. Cape will handle registration for these trainings. Registered participants will receive an email with details from Cape before the training.
Yes, our team may be able to provide in-person training, though availability cannot be guaranteed. To explore this option, please submit your request at least 30 days before your preferred date. Once we receive your request, we will contact you to discuss your needs, assist with selecting a training topic, and either schedule the event or offer alternative resources to support your goals.
Live Virtual Training
Live Virtual trainings are held regularly throughout the year. On our courses page, you can search for upcoming live virtual training using the Delivery Type filter and register for the course(s) you choose. Three business days before the training event, registered participants will receive an email with details of the Zoom meeting and instructions on how to join the training.
It is not necessary, but we do recommend downloading the app and creating an account, as it provides a better experience for you. If you already have Zoom installed, please ensure it is regularly updated. This will give you access to the latest features and reduce technology issues during the event.
You may join the virtual training Zoom from one device if both people are officially registered. Be sure you can both be visible on camera at the same time so you can actively engage throughout the session. If more than two people want to use the same device, you will need to obtain prior approval from the trainer. Contact the KCCTO office to be connected to the course trainer if you would like to discuss this option.
In order to obtain a certificate for the course, each participant needs to be registered individually. Please do not share the Zoom link for the training with others who have not signed up. Instead, encourage them to get registered too.
Online Courses
New to KCCTO online courses? Start with the KCCTO Online Learning Launchpad.
The KCCTO Online Learning Launchpad is a short, open-access course designed to help you feel comfortable taking KCCTO online courses. It gives you a chance to explore what an online course looks and feels like, practice using common tools in Canvas, and understand what to expect before your course begins. The Launchpad is a low-pressure space to click around, try things out, and build confidence—especially if online learning or technology feels new. You don’t need to remember everything. The goal is simply to reduce surprises and help you start your course feeling prepared.
Inside the Online Learning Launchpad, you’ll find:
A brief introduction to KCCTO online learning
An overview of Canvas and how KCCTO courses are organized
Tips for preparing your device before you begin
A chance to practice using common course tools
Troubleshooting support and guidance on where to get help
You can move through the sections in order or jump directly to what you need, anytime.
KCCTO online courses are available during scheduled sessions (typically one to two weeks, but we do have some courses that run longer).
- Regular course sessions start on a Thursday at noon and end the following Thursday at noon (one week long).
- Foundations for the Safe and Healthy Early Care Facilities Module and other course sessions that run longer than a week start on a Thursday at noon and end on the end date Thursday at at noon.
TIP: We always suggest that you begin the courses as soon as you can on Thursday or Friday so you can contact KCCTO before the weekend if you have any questions
On the morning of the course start date, you will receive a username and password prior to the course opening at noon. You will not see your course until noon when it opens.
TIP: Add kccto@ksu.edu to your contacts as safe senders to ensure you receive important correspondence regarding your course(s). If you do not receive your email from KCCTO, check your spam or junk folder. During the scheduled course session, you can access your course at any time of the day or night. You can log in and out as many times as you need.
Even if a one-week course is approved for just a few hours, we don’t suggest that you complete the course in one sitting for two reasons:
1. KCCTO courses are interactive, which means you will need to respond to other participants and the course trainer. If you are the first person to start the course, you will need to return to the course before the end date to respond to other participants.
2. Some courses include assignments that ask you to do an activity in a child care setting and then log back in to post about the activity.
Note that your trainer will be able to view when you have accessed the course and how much time you have spent completing the requirements.
KCCTO uses the Canvas learning management system for all online courses. You can access courses from desktop computers or laptops, tablets, or mobile phones using any up-to-date internet browser. If you are a tablet or mobile user, you can also download the free Canvas Student App. This app is available for both Android and iOS devices.

Note: When the Canvas Student App asks you to find your institution, enter kccto.instructure.com.
Some KCCTO online courses include videos that require a strong internet speed. These videos may require sound – prior to viewing any course videos make sure to locate your volume controls and turn your sound on.
See your course homepage and communication from your trainer(s) for any deadlines that might apply before the course end date.
Be original: You are responsible for providing original content in discussions and quiz completions. You will not receive credit if you copy course discussion responses from course materials or other participants’ posts.
Trainers facilitate KCCTO online courses. Trainers read and score all discussion board posts by participants. These scores are in the course grade book. You may view your grade book by clicking the Grades option on the left-hand menu bar of your course. Trainers will make comments on any assignments that might need revision. Overall course completion is determined on the quality of work and time spent reviewing course material. If you have any questions about whether you have completed all course requirements, please contact your trainer before the last day of the course. Trainers finalize grading the day after the course has ended, after which time you will receive a notification via email regarding your completion or non-completion status. Courses are not extended beyond the listed session dates.

It is up to you to email or call the KCCTO office to request a transfer. Transfers for incomplete courses can only be processed for the same course title and the same participant. You do not need to register and pay again fi you are eligible for a free transfer. If not successful the second time, you will need to register and pay again for the course.
There is no partial credit given for any course: You must complete the course in its entirety to receive a certificate of completion.
No previous responses are saved: If you need to retake a course, you must start from the beginning of the course and complete all assignments in order to receive a certificate of completion. Your work from your first attempt will not be saved or carried over.
TIP: KCCTO’s Foundations for Safe and Healthy Early Care Facilities Module includes 10 topics and is approved for 18 KDHE clock hours. We encourage all participants registered in this course to begin as soon as possible in order to have plenty of time to complete all required assignments. This course is two weeks long to provide additional time for participants to complete all assignments.
Yes, we encourage you to save any course resources or materials that you find valuable for your personal use. However, please note that reproducing, distributing, or using these materials in any format without prior authorization from Kansas Child Care Training Opportunities is strictly prohibited.
The Foundations for Safe and Healthy Early Care Facilities Module supports the basic understanding of safe and healthy care practices for children in licensed facilities. KCCTO’s policy is that a provider may take the 18-hour module once every 5 years. Additional KCCTO courses are available for you to take to expand your knowledge of supporting the health and safety of children in your child care facility.
